What llms.txt can help with

Not much, as far as anyone can measure. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and none of the big assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot) has said it reads the file when answering. Some coding assistants and documentation tools do load it when a user points them at a site.

So we treat it as hygiene, not a ranking factor: it takes ten minutes, it can't hurt, and it's useful if developers use your docs with AI tools. If you want AI to recommend you, start with crawler access and the sources AI cites.

The llms.txt format, in one example

An H1 is the only required part. Everything else is recommended structure. Copy this starter and edit it:

# Example

> One or two sentences on what Example is, who it's for and where you operate.

## Key pages

- [Pricing](https://example.com/pricing): plans and what each includes
- [Product](https://example.com/product): what it does
- [About](https://example.com/about): who we are

## Docs

- [Getting started](https://example.com/docs/start): set-up guide

## Optional

- [Blog](https://example.com/blog): news and guides

Serve it at /llms.txt as text/plain or text/markdown with UTF-8, and use full https:// links.

llms.txt FAQ

How does the llms.txt generator work?

Enter your domain and we read your homepage once: the site name, the meta description and the same-site links in your navigation. We turn those into a draft llms.txt with an H1, a summary and link sections (key pages, docs, optional). We never invent descriptions, so edit the draft, add a short note after each link, and upload it to your site root as /llms.txt.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed markdown file at the root of a website (example.com/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a curated list of its most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org.

Does llms.txt help my site appear in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

There's no good evidence that it does. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and no major AI assistant has confirmed reading it when answering questions. Treat it as an optional summary for tools that support it. Crawler access, clear pages and mentions on sites AI already trusts matter far more.

What does a valid llms.txt need?

Only an H1 with your site or project name is required. The recommended structure adds a blockquote summary right under the H1, optional free text, and H2 sections that each list links as markdown: "- [Name](https://url): optional notes". A section called "Optional" marks links that can be skipped.

What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

llms.txt is a short index of links. llms-full.txt, a common companion, contains the full text of those pages in one markdown file, mostly used by documentation sites so coding assistants can load everything at once.

Should llms.txt replace robots.txt or my sitemap?

No. robots.txt controls which crawlers may fetch your pages, and the sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt is an optional summary on top. Check your robots.txt with our AI crawler checker first: blocking search crawlers costs far more visibility than a missing llms.txt.
